I wasn't aware of this book. Is it any good?

It's quite good, but hardly the definitive guide (though I don't think that's been written). Lots of diagrams, easy to read and comprehend. As a first book on the subject it's worthwhile (and an interesting read). But if it's say your fifth book, you wouldn't learn anthing new.

Does it discuss any of his idiosyncracies such as pumping the accelerator etc? More interested in that than yet another straight race craft book.

I don't recall that sort of thing, more because I don't think it goes into that depth. Mark Hales' articles in Citcuit Driver offer a much deeper analysis. Having said that, it is informative, and does appear to be written in his own hand (a quick scan reminds me that there are a few throwaway comments that you need to stop and think about what he meant and why he said it). I would say it's worth the £16.99 that mine cost.
The one idiosyncracy you do notice is that after very level headed stuff about line, overtaking, gears, etc., it gets on to psychology a bit. The chapter on the warm-up lap (swerve, overtake, do whatever it takes to scare the drivers around you) os almost bizarre.

I've only read the 3rd edition, not the 4th edition that Amazon sells. It covers pretty much every basic subject about track driving, including the differences in handling FWD, RWD, and AWD cars, as well as some excellent photos of heel-toe and double-declutch downshifting. The only bad thing is that there are too many anecdotes and shameless plugs about his school. However, most of the book covers pure track driving, so it's worth it, IMHO.

Yes, Amazon are a waste of time for that book, IME. You're better off on ebay, where I got a copy for about £2.50! Get the latest edition though, my one was written on parchment using a quill...

I like this one :

Sometimes a bit dry, and perhaps I'm not a good enough driver to properly critique, but it all seems sound.

Is the latest edition the paperback, or do you know a way of telling them apart?
Thanks,
Dan
